Fernand Roth

Fernand Roth (born July 30th 1997 - died October 8th 2049) was a Luxembourgish physician, surgeon, and entrepreneur. Widely known as an advocate of life extension medicine, Roth was the founder and lead surgeon of Ugraft, a private clinic in Basel, Switzerland. He had published numerous papers in major medical journals and received several awards.

On October 8th 2049, Roth was killed in a motor vehicle accident near Buffalo, New York, United States (US) after he fled Switzerland following the death of Richie Diniz.

Early life and educationPermalink

Fernand Roth was born on July 30th 1997 in Luxembourg. He graduated from Leiden University with a medical degree in 2022, and practiced medicine as an internal surgeon for several years before moving to the United States (US) to pursue a postgraduate degree in biomedical science. After graduating with a PhD from the Ithaca University of Advanced Education, he moved again for a four-year fellowship in surgery and clinical research at the Paravis Institute.

In 2032, Roth settled in ’s Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, where he entered private practice as a surgeon. Roth developed a reputation for performing difficult surgeries in patients with challenging comorbidities. ^[1]

In 2034, Roth joined robotic surgery startup Asclepius Medical as its CBO, a role he performed while continuing to practice medicine. In a 2037 interview to promote the company’s Machaon 1 remote surgery platform, Roth boasted that he had performed “over 200 procedures” on patients across the world without leaving his office. He claimed to have “no exact specialisation” and instead acted as “sort of a medical troubleshooter.” ^[2]

In 2038, Roth resigned from his position as CBO of Asclepius following the Turkish Surgeon Scandal. He moved to Antwerp, Belgium to return to private surgical practice and “independent research.” At the time, Roth claimed to have no knowledge of medical fraud at Asclepius. ^[3]

Roth was a proponent of novel life extension technology and had received multiple funding grants from wealthy donors connected to the athanatist movement. He took part in multiple clinical trials for possible life-extending drugs, including TRA-253. ^[4]

Roth advocated for organ transplantation as a life extension technology. At a 2042 medical conference in Berlin, Germany, he defended the legalisation and regulation of the organ trade, arguing that “it may be that providing an organ to a high-value individual is the maximal value life course for a low-value individual.” ^[5] Roth was described as a biofascist by critics. ^[6]

UgraftPermalink

In 2043, Roth received seed funding from EnDoctrine to start Ugraft, a private clinic in Basel, Switzerland. Ugraft was touted as the world’s first all-inclusive synthetic gland graft therapy (sGGT) centre, which would culture its own synthetic organs and implant them in its proprietary surgical suite. Construction of the Ugraft facilities began in 2044 and the clinic became operational in 2045. ^[7]

Ugraft performed over 90 gland graft procedures between 2045 and 2049, using over 50 different stem lineages of cultured organs. Ugraft has not participated in any formal trials, offering “frontier” neo-organs on an informed consent model, with treatment plans costing upwards of ¥550 million.

Death of Richie DinizPermalink

On October 2nd 2049, Roth took part in a surgical procedure to graft a synthetic neoappendix to the digestive tract of Richie Diniz. During the surgery, the synthetic organ was damaged, though in spite of this, Roth opted to close the patient with the damaged organ inside him. The engineered bacteria inside the neoappendix made their way out into Diniz’ body cavity and began reproducing uncontrollably, leading to infection and to Diniz’ eventual death through biofab septic cascade syndrome. A statement from Ugraft alleged that Roth suffered a blankout during Diniz’ surgery. ^[8]

According to police reports, Roth’s whereabouts remained uncertain after a crowd of protesters started gathering outside his home in Basel on the night of October 6th 2049. Footage of the protesters showed them holding signs and placards saying JUSTICE FOR RICHIE, suggesting their affiliation with Diniz’ online fanbase. ^[9]

A subsequent leak of Roth’s personal information, including his bank statements and sportsbook accounts, was attributed to the actions of c11g. The leak indicated that Roth had been increasingly struggling to perform in the operating theatre, turning to stimulants and a range of neural colloid implants to enhance his motor function and mitigate his anxiety. Roth suffered a panic attack when he learned about the leak while on a transatlantic flight to New York, which was livestreamed by several other passengers. ^[10]

Ugraft’s role in the death of Diniz led to multiple investigations, including a Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) probe into EnDoctrine’s financial practices. ^[11]

On October 8th 2049, Roth lost control of his rental car while driving to Buffalo and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene of head and neck injuries. ^[12] Traffic camera footage of the accident showed Roth’s car suddenly veering off the road with no apparent external cause.

On October 10th 2049, a leaked toxicology report from New York’s chief medical examiner indicated that Roth’s body showed trace amounts of several stimulants, including concentrations of amphetamine, benzodiazepine, and cocaine. The report concluded that this mix of stimulants could have played “a significant role” in Roth’s fatal accident.
